The campsite, caravan pitches and hostel are situated on the most northerly isle in Scotland and beside the picturesque shore at Uyeasound. As of 2010 tents, motorhomes and touring caravans are allowed to pitch outside this youth hostel however there are strict rules for your consideration - see weblink. Also please book through the warden on the number supplied. This recently refurbished hostel combines superb facilities with a relaxed atmosphere. There are spectacular cliffs, sculpted by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and the North Sea on the east, which contrast with secluded (and largely empty) golden, sandy beaches and stretches of low rocky coastline where seals bask and swim and even otters appear. The site recently opened in the hostel grounds during thanks to a grant from HIE Shetland. The Unst Youth Centre Trust has created a six berth caravan park inside the hostel's walled garden. It‘s aim is to provide visiting caravans with a tarmac area that offers full facilities, including electricity, water and drainage in a place of outstanding beauty and lively culture. Gardiesfauld Youth Hostel
I arrived when the facilitiy was closed in mid November 2008. Tracked down warden in Post Office. Could not have been more helpful. All I wanted was electric hook-up for my motorhome but YH was left unlocked for entire length of stay, meaning I could use washing machines, drying room, showers and cooking facilities (if I wished to). At £6 per night it was fantastic value from trusting, honest, welcoming people. I parked at back of YH, 50m from harbour. It was very windy whist I was there, but what else would you expect! Wonderful island, great to visit, highly recommended.
