Tent camping allowed in the grounds of the hostel which consists of restored thatched blackhouses. Hostel is located next to beautiful sandy bay, due to the location it does not allow access for campervans or caravans. Grid Ref NF932,814 O.S. Sheet No 18. No dogs allowed in hostel. Please note the harbour area referred to in some reviews has recently been closed off and the ferry terminal at Ardmaree has only public toilets with no shower. Please update Scottishcamping.com if you find any other changes.

Our view: Visited in 2004. Lovely location and good facilities. Really is a "get-away-from-it-all" location. Great retreat when the weather turns bad with warm accommodation and good cooking area.

Berneray Crofters' Hostel
This is a wonderful hostel, a great place to stay, or camp; but despite all the other reviews on this site NO CAMPERVANS ARE ALLOWED.

Berneray Crofters' Hostel
Just back from a tour of the outer hebrides in our caravan and this was the best place to stay. I can't agree with the campberneray website at all. When we were there, ther were plenty campervans and caravans and no-one was bothering with them at all. We stayed on the machair just beyond the hostel and it was just idyllic. Tents were pitched up right at the hostel but you couldn't possibly get any vehicle near it anyway. We filled up on water from a tap at the hostel and there are excellent facilities round at the harbour - toilets, shower, freshwater tap behind toilet block. There is a great shop at Ardmaree and there are also toilet/shower/water and CDP facilities at the ferry terminal. If going to the Uists or Barra, ask at any local tourist infor centre for a leaflet which the council provides detailing all the points where you can get freshwater, showers/toiltets and CDPs. There are plenty to be found and caravans and campervans are most welcome anywhere on the Uists as long as they are not on any obvious grazing land. * I've put 5* for everything bearing in mind that this is wild camping and one shouldn't expect laid on entertainment and 24hr shops but the facilities at the harbour are excellent.

Berneray Crofters' Hostel
Just back from recent trip to Berneray in our camper van. Stayed close to the Hostel and used the facility's there no probleme. Got Busy at weekends but thinned out the next day, was like that for a few weeks. Great shower and toilet block to be used for £1 per day. Also abundant hot water for all your washing needs. Would recommend the hostel area and eastbeach for extra long stays. If you are coming to Berneray to shoot photos of the machair or beach come early in the year or later as I could not get a photo without a tent or camper van in it, shame really!!

Berneray (Bearnaraigh) Crofters' Hostel
Great hostel with wonderful views and atmosphere. Also the facilitys are "top notch" with showers etc, We camped close to the hostel for 8 weeks and paid a token amount to use everything that regular hostelers use.... Interesting site here http://www.campberneray.co.uk/

Berneray heaven.
This hostel consists of 2 original blackhouses which are host to an abundance of character and warm interesting people. Situated on the peninsula it boasts fantastic views of the sound of Harris and directly below is a beautiful white sandy beach. Plenty of space for camping... although can be very exposed in high winds. Toilets and shower could do with some bleach..!!( it's a girl thing) however well worth putting up with it for a truly unique experience.

This place can't be real. 2 thatched cottages, comfortable beds, great facilities and views to die for. Cannot improve on Paul's review. You also meet a lot of like minded and interesting people. ?8 or ?4.50 camping.

A little bit of heaven
This place was the high point of my stay - at least as far as accommodation went. Right on the white sand beach and looking over to North Uist, the two tradtional black houses are an absolute picture. There's plenty of space to camp and park vans on the close cropped sward behind. The first house consists mainly of one big room with cooking facilities, a great long table, benches, and a big black stove keeping the whole place warm And you meet the most interesting people there as well. Only sorry I couldn't stay longer (and that the weather wasn't a tiny bit warmer ...).
