Situated on the west coast of Harris, ideal for exploring the whole island to come back to a beautiful summer sunset. Small beach shop is open in the evenings with mobile shop visiting Tuesday and Friday.

Horgabost Campsite It was the most beautiful site I've ever camped on. All sites shold be like this, simple and based purely on the beauty of the place. Kids were happy, pets were happy, all were happy because they were experiencing nature at it's very best. Necessities like showers and toilets perfectly clean. The Isle of Harris is one of the most scenic places I've been lucky enough to visit and then to stay at this campsite, does it get any better! Horgabost Campsite Why can't more sites be like this!?It ran itself!Basic facilities but clean.No bookings taken -just turn up find a space.No rules & regulations-just common sense,everybody respected everyone else. Horgabost Campsite This has got to be one of the most amazing campsites ever. Yes the facilities are basic - but clean! but the campsite has the most amazing atmosphere and the most spectacular view which you would not get in a hotel or holiday let. We got a fab spot literally at the beach edge facing Taransay. We all loved the beach and setting. Cannot wait to go back. Horgabost Campsite -paradise Wow, what a location, the best location we have ever seen for camping. Clear blue water, fine what sand. Camping 5 metres from the beach and with strangely no wind for the two nights this site was amazing. Although strong winds it must be a fight to take the few more shelter pitches. The whole west coast of this part of Harris is unbelieverably beautiful. Facilities fairly basic but its nice that your £1 for the shower (seperate male & female) if unused can be used for the next person. Typically about 60p worth is enough for a good shower! Cleaned daily and you never see the owners but their leave alot of info, you literally just turn-up. I think impossible its full! They leave their contact numbers if any problems. Tents are by the beach, vans are up on the hill overlooking beach and showers. Occurence of our two nights stay was the sea king coastguard helicopter doing repeated take offs and landings about 300m away due to a moutain rescue exercise. Only one tiny 2 man tent nearly got blown away!! But the pilot apoligised to them and all was well :-) Sunets here are amazing as the light hits the hills opposite and Taransay. Tip for food and drink is in Tarbet. The Tarbet inn (not the crazy expensive place in the centre!!) does amazing cappucino (random) and fish and chips. Plus a pint of Hebridian ale or "Island" as they say is a must. Would definitely come here again. Harris is much nicer for spending time and Lewis is just soooo huge! Horgabost Campsite We stayed at Horgabost with our camper van Billbertie, The scenery was outstanding, we lived on lewis many years ago and I still consider this a world class area of natural beauty , the campsite does nothing to distract from this. The loos were clean but neither of us showered being older we found the thought of sharing a changing room not for us, later we saw someone going to the showrers in a bathrobe and we realised we could have done that and dried of in the van. we were sorry the wee bech hut shop was not open at all, just out of curiosity really. we were very grateful that the mobile shop came around as we were running short of food, the van was veyr well stocked and a nice chap. we had what i consider the best pitch on the whole site for vans and the stars at night were just stunning, much better than when e lived on lewis as here there is no sodium induced myopia ( not street lights) i would say and is not huge thing my visitors should be aware that coach after coach load of folk came each day as there were cruise liners in stornoway, so a lot of folk would disgorge looking at the view, really without seeing it and then off they would go again, which was fine but if you had small kids just be aware that coachs make come n to site. We would love to come to this stunning site again, only improvements that would be welcome is perhaps the wee shop keeping some basic stuff for when van not around but there nothing really, Stunning site we had our dog who loves the sea, we are very good at carrying bags for dog mess it upset me to see several mounds of mess on the beach in front of the site had been left by dog owners this despite bags being provided, although we brought our own, so perhaps bigger more noticable signs for anti dog fouling. we will be back. Horgabost Campsite One of the most stunning places I have ever been too, lost my heart there. Although high season, the site wasn't cramped and there is enough room for everybody to find their own special place. Facilities basic but really all you need and very clean and well kept. There are even a couple of take away menues from people who deliver to the site (pizza and seafood). Good value for money, we paid £7 for a 2 man tent a night. Can't wait to visit again! Horgabost Campsite Fantastic Place, couldn't off chosen a better location to get away from the it all. The views are breathtaking. The facilities are just what you need, cleaned twice a day, You can have a long hot shower for a £1 which is more than enough. All you need to know about whats happening around the area is pinned to the board in the kitchen/washing facility area. Great for kids, especially the little shop that opens on site for them to spend their pocket money. We will be returning again sooner rather than later. Horgabost Campsite Just spent two weeks at Horagabost camp site and it has to be said had a fantastic time. Facilities are basic, but clean and perfectly adequate. As others have said, location can't be matched, but a washing machine on site, or indeed somewhere in Harris, would be great for us campers and caravans with kids. Pretty handy wee shop beside the toilets, which supplied everything for a child desperate to get rid of their pocket money. Really great wee site. Horgabost Campsite Just back home after a few days at this very busy campsite. We had a tribe of kids with us who loved being right on the beach. The wee shoppie was a kids paradise, Sweets juice and sand toys all they need to be happy. Loos and showers were basic and caused the teenagers to moan a bit, but it was all we needed. £1.00 got you a nice long shower and there was lots of paying it forward of people leaving a bit of credit for the next sandy body. Horgabost Campsite Enjoyed the wild camping experience! Fantastic views, good pitching sites, virtually midge free, excellent walks - only drawback is COLD water! Beautiful seashells on beaches, even saw Scottish Wild Cats (2) roaming the beach. A definite for someone who is looking for a nature break, free from tv, news & mobile phones! Horgabost Campsite Great location! Portacabin facilities look poor from outside but always clean and modern inside. Beach shop open 2 hours each day but only offering crisps, soft drinks and beach toys. Grocery van visits twice a week. Stonoway an hour away with excellent Co-op - biggest we've seen! Horgabost Camping and Wild Camping On Harris and Lewis Spent four wonderfull nights in August 08. The weather was wonderfull, as a result this was the best location i have ever camped at ! The facilities were adequate, and considering the difficulties of providing these on the islands were in fact first class. Horgabost We stayed here for two nights in July 2009. Fantastic location, but it does tend towards the busy side, so the suggestion would be to take your time in deciding just where to pitch to avoid being too close to others. There is plenty of space over a large area here so taking the time to invest in carrying your equipement a little distance will pay dividends. The facilities are adequate whilst not being outstanding, but hey at least you can get a good shower, above that who cares? If you have kids there is not a lot for them other than the beach, but with such a beach they will be happy for the best part of the day. For those who just want to chill out, well, just rock up and pitch away from others and let it all happen The main recommendation is that we, a fussy couple, would willingly return here and as such intend to in the future. Horgabost Camping and Wild Camping On Harris and Lewis A beautiful site and when we were there in June it was quiet except at weekends when many of the 'static' touring vans were being used. Toilets/showers are excellent but are also used by people using the public access to the beach so can get very sandy and untidy at times. Only cleaned once daily I think. The only thing lacking is a proper chemical disposal point and this is a problem throughout Harris and Lewis. We think that the "Honesty Box" system works well and £10 does not seem too expensive. Stunning My wife and I spent 4 nights here, camping on the machar, with the most stunning and relaxing views across to Taransay. We had mixed weather, which only enhanced the views (we sat for hours at a time just drinking it all in). We had no kids with us, but those who were there were obviously having a great time on the beach and in the stream. Some even went in for a paddle! The water is crystal clear and we saw the occasional seal pop his head out of the water. Location is faultless. Value for money was down a wee bit as one of the gents showers was not working. 2 man tent £5/night, 3 man + over £8 Camper van/caravan £10 The facilities are really good, and they have a lady come round cleaning every day, so nice and clean. If I was looking to enhance this site, a daily visit from a mobile shop would do well, but really, no complaints at all. Horgabost Camping and Wild Camping On Harris and Lewis Stayed for 3 nights in June 2009. Weather mixed, but still beautiful even on the damper days. We camped in a two-man tent on the machair outside the fenced-off area of the actual campsite designated for caravans/motorhomes, we weren't sure if this was allowed at first but there were already a couple of tents pitched there when we arrived, and no-one asked us to move in the 3 days we were there, so we eventually assumed it was ok. Payment for our tent was £5 per night by placing money in an honesty box at the gate in an envelope with details of your car registration etc., caravans/motorhomes were £10 per night. The toilet and shower blocks and washing up block were always spotless and cleaned at least daily by the site proprietors. Only one of the two showers in the gents was working at the time of our stay, and make sure you have a supply of pound coins as the showers operate on a prepayment meter system at £1 a go which lasts for about 10 minutes. Plenty of wildlife to be seen, especially seabirds such as terns and gannets, heard a corncrake each night at dusk but never mamaged to catch a glimpse, we were also lucky enough to have a basking shark come swimming by in full view of the beach a couple of times a day. And no midges! Horgabost Camping and Wild Camping On Harris and Lewis Magnificent views and location on the beach and just off main road. I was there camping for 3 days with two young children and they had the time of there lives! Giving a star rating for children's facilities doesn't really appy because the beach, stream and surrounding machair are exactly what the children liked. Any "playpark" type facilities woud greatly detract from the experience and their own imaginations for play. Made wee friends and had brilliant - safe - fun. We camped near the Toilets/shower/washroom/carpark area overlooking the beach and stream. Ideal for supervising the wee ones close to toiletting and near to the car for transferring the gear. Very clean, friendly, and unspoilt with relaxed set up. Nearest shop (its a good one) is in Leverburgh about 10/15 mins drive so just plan your provisions. We had our little dog with us and there were many others with dogs- no problems - they also love it here. Horgabost camping on Harris Stayed for a few of nights around Easter. The site is just off the main road with direct access to a fantastic beach. There is a bus stop/shelter at the entrance to the site (route W10). The campsite consists of grassy mounds with decent shelter, although we pitched on the sand dunes. The owners call by each evening to clean the facilities and were very friendly. £5 for a small two-man tent per night and the showers were £1. The campsite is clean as are the new toilet facilities. However the shower water pressure was weak and not all of them were working. There are no shops around and the site is incredibly dark at night. Accompanied trips to the toilets were necessary to protect from the boogeyman!! Ultimately, an amazing location and would go back. Horgabost Camping and Wild Camping On Harris and Lewis We have stayed here twice this year, back in May 2008 when the toilets had not long been installed and again in October 2008. The price had gone up from £4 per night to a whopping £10 per night. We feel that considering the fact that it is not an exclusive camping site, the toilets and facilities can be used by any of the Public at any time, you can fill up with water and use the facilities during the day only having to pay for using the showers. Having to pay £10 to stop overnight in our Motorcaravan is a bit steep especially when we are using our own toilet and shower on board our van, and only filling up with water every 3 days. We can stay on a CL or CS campsite with electric hookup for less than this. A fairer pricing scale would be better based on what facilities you use, although it might be difficult to enforce. There is also no dedicated chemical toilet emptying point. Other than this it is a beautiful area and the beaches are amazing. Horgabost Camping and Wild Camping On Harris and Lewis A good official site. Payment is via an honesty box £10 per night. You can pretty much pitch up anywhere but be aware that certain parts are now fenced off to vehicles to protect the machair. There are also some signs up to discourage camping on these areas too but having spoken to a local from Stornaway apparently it is legally OK to camp on these areas but you could be moved on after 3 days. She hadn't seen any evidence of this happening though. The loos and showers are fine in a portakabin sort of way. Word of warning though, in the ladies although the door is opaque, the only hooks to hang clothes on are outside the cubicle about 6 feet away. As the toilet door is usually open you are at risk of a naked dripping dash to retrieve your towel in sight of many passers-by. Horgabost Camping We have just returned from 4 nights campervan camping at Horagabost, the site is fantastic, we live in the north west Highlands and went over to Harris as my wife has relations there. The site has toilets and showers which were clean and fresh with plenty paper towels liquid soap etc. the showers work well but watch out for the clear glass doors !! There are no hookups but I. think that this actually adds to the site as you can park where you want there are no actual pitches so there is no- one checking the size of your awning or if there is an extra tent or your parked straight etc, saying that there are plenty places to pitch up, some are slightly better than others, it does not really matter when you turn up as people are arriving and leaving all the time even in mid August there was still space around to camp. There are no facilities for kids as such but no-one going to Harris would expect them. There is also no bar, cafe, shops or resturants anywhere near the site. The site sits right on the beach and it seemed very safe for children but if you dont like sand everywhere dont go to Horgabost. There is a grocers van comes around on Tues and Fri mornings and it sells fresh milk and various food stuffs the prices are fine. There is very little radio reception at the site, also getting daily papers is difficult. We did notice that a lot of the rough camping places that people had mentioned in other reviews were blocked off, but when there is a place like Horgabost why rough camp. This site is great value for money, there is an honesty box at the gate where you leave your cash, for the camper it was £10 per night. If you go in the summer months take midge spray most of the time there was a cooling breeze but if the wind dropped the midges were bad. also because of the lack of nearby shops take plenty stores, if not its a 12 mile drive to the town. All in All this was a very laid back but well maintained, quiet camp site. Well done the owners..... Horgabost Camping and Wild Camping On Harris and Lewis We have just spent 4 nights at Horgabost. Perhaps because they are brand sparkly new, the showers, toilet and washing up areas are fantastic, and regularly cleaned / well-looked after by the managers of the site. Showers are modern and electric, a £1 in the meter will give you about 5 mins. the fees for camping are (from memory) £5 for a two-man tent per night and £8 for 3+. I'm not sure about caravans/campers. Given the facilities, this is very reasonable - I've paid much more for much grottier elsewhere! It's the location of course that makes this place so special. when the sun shines it is breathtaking, but even on the windier more overcast days, the views are still something to behold, and that milky-turquoise water always looks stunning. Plenty of children around when we were there, enjoying themselves playing on the beach, the dunes, or fishing with nets in the little stream at the back of the beach. If travelling to Harris again then without a doubt I would return here. And with Calmac prices set to go down from October, it may be sooner rather than later. loved it. Wild Camping and Unofficial Sites Inc Horgabost We are just back from a two night stay at Horgabost. Weather was very typical for the Isles but we had an enjoyable time. There are no facilities for kids as such but with a beach that good, a stones throw away, then the only thing limiting the kids is there imagination. Toilets and showers were spotless. Drying room was excellent, it had sinks aswell for washing whatever and there were sockets available. Owners were very nice and helpfull. Possibly the Best Camp site in the world.... Spent a single night here, 1st week of June 2008. In a word - unbelievable. The scenery is quite stunning. A simple coastal camp site is now not enough after camping at Horgabost!! Camped 10 feet from the beach, white sands, blue skies, aquamarine sea then stunning mountains across the sound of Taransay. Razorbills, Terns, Mergansers and Seals fishing, just offshore. Light till midnight, perfect! Left £20 in the honesty box to help towards the new amenities which are onsite but not plugged in. Wild Camping and Unofficial Sites Inc Horgabost We were recommended to try the picnic site at Horgabost as the toilets had just been refurbished. we did and the place is absolutely amazing. the toilets and showers are all brand new and the couple who are setting up the site for managed camping are really keen. Unfortunately the electricity had not been connected whilst we were there, but should be by the time I write this review. payment is via an honesty box at the gate, but believe me it is worth every penny they charge, (at present the suggested rate is £10 for a caravan, £5 per tent) The facilities are first class and the beach is to die for. This has been my first experience at caravanning in the Hebrides and if this is the standard then I am looking forward to returning again and again. Well done to the managers and the best of luck. Wild Camping and Unofficial Sites Inc Horgabost We camped at Luskentyre in August, pitching our tent but also had our van with us. It is fantastic- the sands are just the most amazing sight. Despite it being teh height of the season, there was hardly anyone around and onlt a couple of other people camping on the machair next to the sands. There were also a few people right at the end of the road near the public loos. There were a few caravans that looked as though they are permnantly sighted but they were empty. Don't let it put you off- it really is a gorgeous place. We paid the first house on the right 3 quid and there is an outisde tap. The toilets at the end of the road (about 2 miles down from the main camp spot) are modern, clean and seem to always be open. Take a bike so you can cycle down! Wild Camping and Unofficial Sites Inc Horgabost We parked our camper van for two nights on dunes of Luskentyre overlooking the beautiful Harris beaches July 2006. The local crofter charged ?2 per adult and had an outside tap for water - we got showers from the ferry terminal in Tarbet which were fine. BBQs on the beach, unbelievably hot weather, so were forced to swim in those beautiful Atlantic waters! Wild Camping and Unofficial Sites Inc Horgabost Hello I read all the reviews and was planning to stay at Horgabost but the only toilets I found there had been dismantled with the pans left lying around in the sand,cannot believe that the authorities on Harris were responsible for this.Wild camped (in camper) at Hushinish...There are toilets at the very end of the road.why are there no campsites on Harris?? Wild Camping and Unofficial Sites Inc Horgabost This has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Facilities are basic (public toilets and wash hand basins + drinking water from outside tap) but well worth it for the peace and tranquility even when busy. Vans should park in car park and not on machair to avoid erosion. We have visited in all weathers and it is always a pleasure to return.
