A warm island welcome awaits you at this small friendly, family-run site which lies immediately beside the home of the owner on the scenic west coast of Lewis. It is ideally situated for sandy beaches, coastal and moorland walks, hill climbing, loch fishing and close to many significant historical sites such as the Callanish Standing Stones. From Barvas on the A857 take A858 for 6 miles. Located behind the school and museum in North Shawbost. Family owned and run by the MacAulay family. 10 tent pitches and 10 hookups. Chemical waste disposal point.
Total pitches: 30

Open from Apr to Oct
Our view: We stayed on this site in 2005 and were impressed with the facilities available for campers in the event of bad weather. There are good indoor cooking facilities and a small dining area to eat your own food. Most of the pitches are grass and reasonably le

Eilean Fraoich Camp Site
We stayed 3 nights in June 2010. The site was a great base for touring. The weather during our stay was pretty windy and sometimes wet therefore the room with kitchen area and table and chairs was heaven sent. Kitchen area included two ring gas cooker, toaster and fridge. Toilets could perhaps be modernised but very clean with shower (50p) and plenty of hot water. All in all a superb site.

Great base for seeing Lewis. Very freindly, clean site, excellent facilities if raining as wash house has area for cooking and dining. Showers coin operated. Next door is a school pool which is open to public in evening. Owners very hospitable.

We stayed for three nights in June 2009. Facilities are basic but kept spotlessly clean. Only slight grumble is that toilet cubicles are rather small so that knees almost touch the door. Owners are very friendly and helpful and are continuously cleaning the facilities. A very good value for money site and we intend to return.

Stayed here for 1 night Sept 07 - as other reviews however we did not encounter any issues whe we requested the laundry service. It was very windy so owner placed us behind the house to shelter motorhome and plugged us into his mains as we were too far from the hook ups. great site for a stop over near Callanish and the lovely beaches nearby.

Stayed here for only one night in our caravan in August 2008. It's a lovely wee site with a lot of thoughtful extras, especially for the campers (kitchen, dining area). It is, as someone mentioned, basically in the owner's garden but the grass is lovely. There is not much of a view from the place (we were spoilt having previously wild caravanned right on beaches) but it's handy for visiting lots of places on Lewis. One down side though. Yes it offers a laundry service (owner does it for you) which costs £3 per load and another £3 for drying however the owner is NOT willing to do laundries for people only staying one night.

We have just spent five nights at Eilean Fraoich campsite at North Shawbost on Lewis and were the first customers under canvas this year. Cycled from Stornoway on tandem and arrived late afternoon in the rain so once the tent was up made full use of excellent kitchen and dining room facilities. There were two toilets and one shower in both the ladies and gents, well maintained - 40p required for shower. Additional council toilets available fifty yards away. Our pitch was level although one section of the site is sloping slightly. Price for 1 tent, 2 people and 1 tandem was £8 per night. Local shop (Butt View Stores – turn right at main road, then second left) currently for sale so stocks were low but adequate.Shop open until 8.30pm during our stay. Site owner is also local milk lady. Nothing specific laid on for children but fantastic beach and coastal walks nearby. Overall a good site - we would use again.

We stayed her for one night in August 2006 when there seemed to be a bit of an unoffical VW Transporter meeting happening - ours made four! The facilities are fine although the bathrooms could do with being a little bigger - the upside is that the kitchen and eating areas in the same block are a good size. The edge of village location added to the interest with the local fire station down in the valley carrying out hose practice in the evening and the sound of the kids at the local school in the morning. The thing that really makes the site though is the extremely helpful owner, who manages to be everpresent without you feeling you're being watched over. And the thing that really, really makes the site stand out is the service wash - £3 for a load of washing (£5 if you have it dried) is the sort of little luxury that makes two weeks in a campervan slightly more civilised.

This is a nice little site with very pleasant & helpful owners. The site is really just the garden of the owners? house so the owners are always on hand. The site is especially good for campers with the very good kitchen and dining/sitting room. Not quite so good for caravans though, the waste disposal facilities are quite poor with the waste water and the chemical toilets being emptied down the same drain. There is an ample supply of very hot water at all times, although the showers are metered, this at least keeps down the time you need to wait for a shower at peak times, only one shower for each sex. The toilet cubicles are very small (smaller than many caravan toilets) but clean and functional. Privacy is a problem with the cubical partitions being very thin and ill fitting as are the doors, and if you are washing at the basins the world can see you when the main door to the toilet block is opened. The kitchen is well equipped with a separate sink for dishes/veg prep and another for clothes washing, a fridge and small cooker are also there for those who need them. Washing machine & dryer are made available for campers use. The site is in a good position for exploring the west of Lewis with the Black Houses & Standing Stones just down the road. Corncrakes were heard in the early hours of the morning and a hand weaving loom could be heard working in the distance most days. The site was very busy during our stay and although advertised as a 10 pitch site in the Visit Hebrides book and on the internet there were over 20 tents and caravans on site some nights. This meant that everyone was rather squashed together with the resulting noise from the other campers preventing early nights. The charges are very reasonable at around £11.50 for a caravan with 4 people (inc. electric). I have only given 3 stars for onsite facilities as I was a caravan user but I am sure this rating would be higher if I had been a tenter.

Jewel of a site
I felt compelled to write this review having just seen an earlier review on this site. We found this campsite by accident - what a find! It was the best we've stayed on in many years of camping. The facilities were excellent with many extra thoughtful little touches and nothing was too much trouble to ensure one had a good stay. The cooking area was well equiped with toaster, fridge and cooker and the communal/dining area is a great idea where campers get to know each other and have the choice of eating indoors. Everything was well organised and kept to a high standard of cleanliness with plenty of hot water available at all times. The grass was kept immaculate - unlike others we've camped on and we couldn't have wished for a friendlier welcome and hospitality. A little bit of thought has made this jewel of a site better than others. Loved staying there and we will go back

For a Great Holiday with Traditional Atmosphere
I have been to this campsite for the past 3 years. It offers a delightful base to explore the Island. Beautiful beaches are within easy walking distance. The more adventurous can walk out the moor adjacent to the site and do some hill climbing or visit the locals whilst they engage in the old tradition of "cutting peats". The site itself is one of the most practical I have ever been on. The facilities are simple, though sufficent. They are cleaned to a very high standard. The owners are wonderful. They make you feel right at home, as if you were a member of their own family. The Island is a beautiful place to visit and well worth the ferry fare.. I would advise all keen campers to venture up to the Western Isles. I visit there every year, the first two weeks in August so if you read this review, I look forward to meeting with you in the future at Eilean Fraoich (Heather Isle) campsite.. and showing you the sites. Regards to you all.. Cheers
