This site previously offered: large camping area in this isolated yet wonderful location on the road to Achiltibuie (nearest shop and hotel) from Ullapool. Achnahaird Caravan and Camping Site CLOSED
I agree with the vast majority of posters on here. This site was the best site I have EVER been on, for sheer unadulterated beauty, peace and tranquility. My family and I - and the various other families we used to holiday with at this site were all totally gutted when we found it had closed. I heard that it was closed due to not meeting health and safety requirements - although I have no idea whether this is true. Who cares if there were no showers ? The loveliest site with the loveliest people. Can't we start some sort of gentle campaign to get it re-opened ???

This was a lovely site. We recently stayed over the hill at the new campsite when we realised this was no longer here (Port A Bhaigh Campsite, Altandhu, Achiltibuie www.portabhaigh.co.uk) which was also brilliant.

Sad News How sad we were to hear that this wonderful campsite has closed as we have many good memories of fantastic holidays there. We made many a pilgrimage to Achnahaird every year during the school holidays and met up with other like minded families and formed long standing friendships. The views are stunning and the site although lacking in "modern" facilities offers the perfect escape from hectic lifestyles.Children could amuse themselves all day long by using their imaginations and natures provisions. Achnahaird site for us was magical and a proper campsite, and now it is closed. Why?

Arrival at Achnahaird became a home-coming: once discovered, it was a magnet for our family holidays when I was a child in the 1970s and early 80s. Each summer, we stayed as long as we could - sometimes a fortnight - before heading back home (Shropshire). It was, and remains, a different experience of time and space; very slightly melancholy (or so it feels now - perhaps nostalgia), but utterly and magically beautiful. My heart is there, and now I have my own young children I want them to know it too. I really hope the campsite will return.

We travelled from Cheltenham on recommedation and the site proved to be a piece of heaven and we shall miss it.Is anyone aware if the lease is going to be renewed. If so we should petition the Camping and Caravaning Club to consider its future perhaps!

we are devastated. my wife cried, when we left, four years ago. lying in the tent at night, listening to the oyster catchers working the sea inlet was magic. the owners were lovely people.

I came here with my parents over 35 years ago and loved it so much, I introduced my husband to the area he fell in love with it we later on brought our children here and have been returning ever since it is so sad to think that the site is no more and it will be sorely missed. We have made some very good friends whilst on holiday here.

I was just going to recommend this site to THE BIG SITES GUIDE as I have used it 6 times over the last 15 years, because of its fantastic scenery, peacefulness, adequate space for any size/weight vehicle ( 4 TON HYMER towing a SMART CAR) without interfereing with your neighbour. Lovely sunsets and sunrises so is a haven for the photographer. There is a small but well stocked General Store within 5 mins drive on the other side of the headland overlooking the Summer Isles. We have always made a beline to this site when ever we visited Scotland, so I am truly upset that is now closed. WHERE WILL I FIND ANOTHER PLACE LIKE THIS ONE.

This was the best campsite my brother-in-law and I ever had the pleasure to stay at. Very sad to see it go. We met so many like minded people and had wonderful fishing excursions based at the site. If Jane & Conon see this post -Jan & Nick would like to get in touch again for more tales around the camp fire. You can get in touch through -contact@turnstonecottage.com

We are very sorry that such a lovely place is going to close. The view was spectacular, the facilities very clean, and all the people there were peacefully and quietly having a good time, as did we.

This is the perfect campsite for those wanting to truly enjoy the scenery and feel of the Highlands, without being swamped by a regimented location. We were self contained, requiring only the basic requirements available, which were well maintained and conveniently situated. The fresh water was of superb quality and cherished long after leaving! For dogs, children and young at heart adults, this is paradise. Sand, dunes, bunnies, fishing, safe boating or canoeing, and the friendly communities of Polbain and Achiltibuie nearby. What a sad, sad loss it will be for the local retailers and the hundreds of clients who have enjoyed staying and are yet to discover this wonderful location. Surely the local council can help to keep this going. Such a facility attracts the very type of visitors that give camping a good name. Full marks to Marylin and Hecter for making so many people happy. Put me down on any petition if required. I want my children and grandchildren to experience this.

We've just camped here for 6 nights and had a fantastic time with our 3 3/4 year old boy. Ok, so there's no hot water or showers but the loos are kept clean and we warmed water on the stove to have washes in a bowl as we were told that the local community centre showers were shut at that time! It was all worth it though. The view of the mountains is brilliant and the beach superb. That IS the 'facility for kids' but what more could a little one need - lovely sand, the sea suitable for paddling in, rock pools and sand dunes to jump down. We had a great boat trip to the Summer Islands which cost £40 for the 3 of us and we saw two seal colonys. The lease on this camp site is coming to an end so 2008 is possibly the last season. It would be a shame if it didn't reopen as the location drew many people to it when we were there and as it's over a big area so you don't need to camp too near to any one else. The lack of facilities will put some people off but not the ones who want scenery and location to be the deciding factor of their holiday. Ullapool is the nearest 'town' which is a lovely place with boats in the harbour and shops and cafes on the front.

Loved this site, stunning location and very peaceful. If there had been showers and hot water on-site this would have been the perfect campsite, however we still managed to get a shower thanks to the community hall, Coigach. The beach is gorgeous, spent a lot of time there. I can't believe we have just found this piece of heaven just as it is about to close.

Stunning location above the dunes. Loads of space and very clean flush toilets with cold water tap. Wardens friendly and helpful. A great shame it will close at the end of the season.

A great place to chill out! Stunning views, excellent hill-walking and sometimes good weather (we camped for a week early May and had shorts and T shirts on 4 days out of 6). Facilities are basic but always clean. Hurry to experience the 'Achnahaird Effect' - the lease runs out possibly as early as the end of 2008! See entry in 'CoolCamping - Scotland'.

Stunning campsite with great views and a great basic unspoiled area. Beach very flat and sandy so great for walking. On still nights take a Midge eater!!! But its worth it for the views of the stars in the sky on clear nights. Good for tiring out dogs or kids...

A beautiful Place
An absolutely stunning site, admittedly the toilet block has no hot water or showers, but the local toilets have a shower should you have the urge to wash. The site itself is huge, very quiet and very dry, so you never feel crowded, and the views are some of the best in Scotland. Excellent rock and beach fishing nearby and a very cosy little pub down the road. I've been coming here for the last 6 years and I can't wait for my next visit.

Beautiful but basic
Beautiful location with stunning views. This is definitely one for the bonding with nature types. Facilities are very basic, no hot water or showers (as described) but the scenery makes up for the lack of facilities.
