Kintra Farm Campsite Islay
Lovely position right beside the sandy beach but quite expensive for what you get(£16). They tell you to boil the water but they should also say it is sandy and if you have a motorhome DO NOT put it into your onboard tank, it will block the pump filter. Be also aware that one of the other many regulations is you can't use the toilet in your van as they don't allow the empty out which is odd, they would rather you do it first hand straight into their toilet; which can be annoying if you have one of those heavenly spots right at the far side overlooking the sea. But grumbles aside it is well worth the visit.

This has to be one of the best possible campsites, mixing wild rolling dunes with hot water, showers and a reading shelf. In 5 nights early this July we saw amazing sunsets, walked on the beach and swam in the sea. Nature is the only nightlife needed for a great break here.

set in the sanddunes next to the beach not ideal if you have a lowered campervan like mine .but otherwise lovely location with great sunsets .the only downside is quite along way from toilets at night so make sure you have got a good torch.can get busy in morning while waiting for showers and sinks.some nice spots to be had if not already taken i went for the high ground on the dunes .lovely in the morning but can get very windy and wet if weather is bad.but definately back to basics but hey relax and watch the world go by.

We stayed here 2 nights this year, we paid £11 per night for a tent, 2 people and a car. The reception is beside the farm...if you arrive between 9am and 7pm, ring the bell inside the reception, otherwise set up and see the owner later! The toilets, showers, dish-washing facilities are beside the reception....there is also a fridge and an electric kettle. If you want to use the washing machine/tumble drier, buy the tokens when you see the owner as it is a working farm and he's not always available! Beautiful beach!

The view and setting are superb and you get to select where you camp among the dunes and then pin your pitch on the map. A welcome idiosyncratic campsite with very unique owners; refreshingly unique in my view given the corporate style campsites you can easily find.

This campsite has its fans and its detractors, online as well as the campers we encountered during our stay. Although the showers were slightly unpredictable, the facilities were otherwise fine, easily accesible and the owners welcoming. There are quite a few 'rules' but they are more like common courtesies and advice, and we think it's worth bearing in mind that it is a working farm, and their busiest farming season co-incides with their busiest camping season. For some, the patience this sometimes requires (lambs baa-ing all night, tractors, sheep shearers working early and late etc!) this will be a nuisance, for others part of the whole experience. For setting, though Kintra simply cannot be bettered, and we don't hesitate in recommending it.

Wonderful views
Fantastic sunsets from the tent. You camp in the dunes next to the beach. It can get windy, some tents struggled, but there is some shelter. The facilities are rather basic, with only 2 womens toilets and 1 malfunctioning shower. Despite this the cost was a hefty ?12. There is a washing machine but it proved virtually impossible to use it and I saw lots of families give up as it was hardly ever convenient for the owners to sell the tokens (around ?3 per wash) My opinion was that it is a fatastic setting, but that campers were packed on without thought for the inadequate facilities. The list of "rules" and do's and don't's raised lots of laughs though! All in all a lovely area with idyllic views and the beauty of the sea and beach within feet, but be prepared for a tent wash in a bucket!!

The perfect campsite
For my tastes, the ideal campsite allows you to find a spot in the machair with a view of the sea by a gorgeous sandy beach where you can relax and watch the sunset without feeling regimented or beset by rules, and Kintra is that place. Kintra has all the facilities you really need, showers, kitchen sinks, washing machine and dryer etc etc, and a good variety of tents, caravans and motor homes. However, it's close enough to rough camping that you still feel close to nature (our tent was invaded by a hedgehog and we had wonderful encounters with various birds of prey and a huge array of other wildlife including a rare variety of seal. There are lots of places to go walks or cycling and towns nearby with all the amenities you need. The owners were friendly and helpful to fault. I suppose it depends on what you want from a campsite, you won't find close clipped grass, electric hook-ups or marked out pitches here, but for sheer beauty, relaxed camping and connecting with the outdoors, Kintra remains my favourite campsite ever.
