This link in a frame Category: The Uists, Benbecula and Barra There are now two official site on the Isle of Barra. We list both and you can access them via a search for Barra. You may wild camp with consent from the local crofter or the local responsible for the common grasing. Please see the weblink above and read the visitors reviews below which relate to camping near to the airport (now closed off due to erosion), on Vatersay and at Eoligarry. There is the Dunard Hostel with no camping in Castlebay for backpackers. The weblink above has more information on camping and the Island.

Isle of Barra Campsite at Sliochd Uaine, Borve, Isle of Barra now partially open but no facilities as yet. Excellent location for sunsets and nature watching. Five minutes walk from Isle of Barra Beach Hotel for pub and food. Two miles from main town of Castlebay and mainland ferry terminal. Isle of Barra Just back from Barra where we found that a number of small camping areas( 3 vans max) have recently sprung up at varying locations around the Island. We found two sites at the north point of Eoligarry, the first appeared to be very exposed to the strong winds that weekend but the 2nd, 50m to the north provided good shelter from most directions together with water, effluent waist and rubbish deposit for a reasonably small fee. Isle of Barra Visitors to the beautiful islands of Barra & Vatersay in 2010 may like to know that the former unofficial site used by motorhomes & caravans at the airport beach is now permanently CLOSED to ALL motorised vehicles. There had been so many users in 2009 that the area was badly eroded and damaged. All the wild flowers, and the ground nesting birds had gone. This area protects the road and airport - a vital island resource - from flooding. So the campsite - never legal - has had to go! It was closed after intervention from the Western Isles Planning Department. Protective posts preventing vehicle access, and explanatory notices are now in place. To avoid disappointment this year, vehicles wishing to camp on Barra or Vatersay should consult the island website as to alternative campsites -- tho' be aware that spaces are very limited! Isle of Barra, Changes to Camping Areas. Hello, I thought it appropriate to inform future campers, that the ground adjacent to the Airport in Eoligarry, has now been cordoned off. Due to high amounts of erosion sustained over the last year, with higher volumes of camper vans, caravans, and campers, the decision was taken to fence the area off. It is hoped that tourists will respect this, and will not attempt to camp in this area. Public camping facilities are situated at Eoligarry Jetty, past the Airport to the North, and at Vatersay Community Hall, in Vatersay to the South. It is also asked that campers, continue to respect locals whilst visiting. Please ask landowners permission before setting up camp, and please do not camp in lay-bys on the road, and please allow local drivers to overtake, when necessary, as it has been known in the past, that tourists often do not allow emergency services volunteers past in emergencies. Thank you, and we hope that we'll see you in the Summer Season. Isle of Barra The unofficial site used by caravans and campervans on the beach by Barra airport in the past has now been closed as a result of the coastal erosion it was causing and the serious damage to the machair. Posts have been erected around the entire area, and it is now (January 2010 onwards) closed to ALL vehicles. Overnight camping with vehicles is now forbidden in this area. There is space for a few motorhomes at Vatersay and Eoilgarry jetty, but please note that the number of pitches is extremely limited. Isle of Barra Just returned from 2 weeks touring Outer Hebrides. Roughed camped on Barra on beach by old jetty, (just pass the airport). Nearby was a toilet and tap. Fanatastic weather, was able to have fires every night. Recommend the island to anyone. Isle of Barra - Wild Camping We started our 2 week tour of the Outer Hebrides in Barra, Spending the first night at Vatersay Village Hall. There is a small car park which could accommodate probably 4 Mhomes max. Open 24 hours is a disabled toilet with sink, which was clean & well stocked, with an electric light. Opposite the 'site' is a wonderful beach just 1 minute walk away. A great start to the trip being only 15 mins drive from Castlebay Ferry port. The second night we travelled up to Eoligarry, hoping to make use of facilities there (our campervan doesn't have a WC onboard) but there was legislation posted all over the walls of the public convenience/office about wild campping & although unclear we got the impression we couldn't wild camp there. So we headed to Barra airport & wild camped there, erecting the utility tent housing the trusty Thetford. There were 4 other campers there so we felt safe & the sunset/rise was amazing. Be warned though there are a lot of midges as the day starts to warm up ! If you have WC onboard you will have no problem wild camping in Barra, we managed & enjoyed our 2 night stay there I hope you go there soon & feel the same........ Isle of Barra camped at the airport for a couple of nights this june, first time in the area and we were blessed with terrific weather. the beach is great and the planes landing a thrill, the best beach is over he back from the airport, just follow the path over the stile, and the pure white sands takes your breath away. facilities in thre airport, (when open) are great, as is the coffee, and water is available 24/7. another good site we found when we moved off was on Eriskay, many just drive straight through this little gem, but the machair just past the graveyards is right on the beach and beautiful. Showers and a cdp are available at the ferry terminal, excelent. Isle of Barra Stayed 2 nights on Barra near the airport, ist night we arrived in the pouring rain and darkness as the ferry was running late from Oban but we still managed to find the spot. 2nd night was blustery but all adds to the excitement. The CDP and toilet at Eoligarry were open and in excellent condition just aim for the old jetty, we asked a local bloke and would have missed it otherwise. The community hall at Vatersay looks good with the toilets open and as mentioned honesty box. will remember that for next time. Barra and Vatersay are beautiful islands with enough in Castlebay inc fuel to keep you going. vatersay Camped on Vateray in August, making use of toilet and tap. Honesty box (suggested fee £4 per night ) monies collected go towards the dune conservation work. The location is stunning, two dream beaches back to back. Isle of Barra Having just camped the Outer Hebrides, I'd say Barra and Vattersay are by far the best islands to stay. We rough camped on the beach at the airport without any difficulites, used toilet facilities at the airport during the day (there's a tap outside for water 24h) and showered at the ferry terminal. Good news for rough campers on Barra Just got back from cycling the Hebrides again, and can report that the loo block and tap at Eoligarry are functioning again, making this one of the most beautiful (and convenient) camp spots in the islands. The loos were being repainted and repaired while we were there. Also, there are some lovely spots on Vatersay, with a outdoor tap and 24 hour loo available at the Community centre. Rough camping on Barra May 2005: camping on the ground beside the airport (it's obvious where people do it) is lovely. The only problem is if you need (or want)a loo: the ones marked on the map at Eoligarry are closed, and the CalMac ones in Castlebay only open during office hours. However there are new and very nice loos at the new ferry terminal for Eriskay at Aird Mhor, which are open all day (though not all night).
