Pitches for tents in the grounds and camper vans can be parked outside the church 50 metres from the hostel. Both can use the hostel facilities. Hostel looks eastwards towards Beinn Mhor the highest mountain on South Uist. Located at Grid Ref NF 757364. Coastal walks. No dogs allowed in hostel.
Total pitches: 5
Pub 8 miles
Open All Year round
Our view: Visited in 2004 and there were several tent campers at this site. You can park camper vans next to the church. Interesting village consisting of many modernised traditional blackhouses. Well equipped hostel.

Howmore Crofters' Hostel
We didn't stay exactly at the hostel but on the machair just beyond on an excellent little pitch by the river. Absolutely stunning views. We filled up with water at Kildonan Museum. As we only stayed two nights, emptying the loo wasn't an issue and we were able to do this at the next stop in Berneray. Please note that the Western Isles Tourist Board publish a leaflet (available from tourist info places) detailed all the places you can get water/loos/shower/CDP on the Uists and Barra. Wild pitching on the machair is fine as long as you are not in any obvious grazing places. No-one bothered us at all and it cost nada!

Howmore (Tobha Mor) Crofters' Hostel
Stayed here early June 2007,weather Gorgeous, parked our Campervans in the chapel Car park, fresh water available from Hostel,Chapel toilet left open,as was the lovely little chapel with a unique communion table.Hostel a bit basic,as were the facilities,no staff seen. The cleaners at the Chapel were lovely friendly people though. Beach (away from river mouth,a bit smelly) Absolutely Stunning ! when can we go back.

Camping at Howmore
The hostel is unpreposessing - and surrounded by mud - but the facilities are there and it's warm. The ground around is fairly humpy bumpy for camping, but the church car-park is fine for small camper vans. The place is completely surrounded by wildlife - birds and otters - and well placed on South uist. In fact it's a lovely position, and work is being done to improve the hostel a bit.

Birding heaven
We camped for one night to shower and wash clothes. The facilities, though basic, are more than adequate, especially the well-equipped kitchen. The location has a special kind of beauty. Sitting outside in the evening sun, listening to the corncrakes a few metres away, drumming snipe, redshanks and lapwings - unforgettable. Can't wait to go back. Some using the dormitories envied us our tent because birds in the thatch were pooing on them! There is a shop at the end of the lane selling necessary provisions (including Hebridean beer) even on Sunday!
